Outdoor furniture fails in predictable ways: cushions that mildew, steel that rusts at the welds, "wicker" that flakes after one summer of UV. The difference between a set that lasts 2 years and one that lasts 10 is almost entirely the materials. Here's what to look for — and what to avoid — before you buy.
Frames: what actually survives outside
- HDPE resin wicker (high-density polyethylene) is the gold standard for woven furniture. It's UV-stabilized plastic that keeps its color and flexibility for years. Cheap PVC wicker looks similar on day one and cracks by year two — if a listing doesn't say HDPE or "all-weather resin," assume PVC.
- Powder-coated aluminum doesn't rust, period. It's the best frame metal for rainy or coastal climates and light enough to rearrange.
- Steel is stronger and cheaper but will eventually rust where the coating chips. Fine under a covered patio; risky exposed.
- Acacia and teak weather beautifully if you oil them yearly; left alone they go silver-gray (which many people love). Avoid unnamed "hardwood."
Cushions: the part everyone regrets
Look for olefin or solution-dyed polyester covers (the color is in the fiber, so it can't bleach out) and quick-dry foam. Zippered, removable covers mean you can actually wash them. Store cushions dry over winter — that single habit doubles their life.
Match the set to how you actually sit
- Hosting dinners? A true outdoor dining set earns its space.
- Evenings and conversation? A conversation set around a coffee table (or a fire pit) gets used far more than a dining table.
- Small balcony? Two outdoor chairs and a side table beat a crammed loveseat.
- Sun protection turns a hot deck into usable space — see umbrellas & sunshades and gazebos.
Five-minute quality checklist
- Frame material named explicitly (HDPE, powder-coated aluminum, teak — not just "metal" or "wicker").
- Weight capacity listed per seat.
- Cushion fabric named (olefin / solution-dyed) and covers removable.
- Hardware stainless or coated — bare bolts are the first rust spot.
- A real return window, so you can judge it on your own patio. (Ours is 30 days, and U.S. shipping is free.)
